About Sgt. Maj. Y.M. Ben-Caro (IDF Res.)

Y.M. Ben-Caro is a Sergeant-Major in the Israel Defense Force reserves. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he first made aliyah and immigrated to Israel in 2006. Serving in Tzanchanim (Paratroopers) 890, he ostensibly fired the first shots of ground troops in Operation: Cast Lead, the Gaza War of 2008 – 2009.

Ben-Caro also worked with the United States Armed Forces as a Department of Defense (War) contractor for seven years with intense training programs and simulations, functioning as an assistant manager, subject matter expert, and instructor asset.

In the IDF reserves, Sgt. Maj. Ben-Caro continues to serve with Tzanchanim (Paratroopers), but he has also volunteered to serve with seven other units, including key sayaret (special forces) units. His military occupational specialties include lead designated marksman, lead SPIKE (Gil) missile operator, lead surveillance drone expert, and training instructor.

After the heinous attacks by Hamas on the Jewish people and others living in southern Israel on October 7th, 2023, Ben-Caro signed up for additional duty. He has voluntarily served for over 800 days since that time – mostly in combat operations on the front lines – even after receiving “wounded-in-action” status upon getting shot in the foot.

Previously, Y.M. Ben-Caro has been an active member of the Jewish communities of Phoenix, Arizona, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and beyond. He has held such roles as the Head of Community Security, defacto Treasurer, and a member of the Board of Adjuntos of the oldest continuously-functioning synagogue in North America.

Ben-Caro now resides with his wife and daughter in Israel, who actively support him from the “home front” while he serves in the combat zones.
